The palmPSone was my first attempt at any kind of hardware hacking. It was a simple idea; hard wire together a PS one and a Sony LCD inside of a plastic case.

It uses most of the same buttons as the dualshock controller with tactile switches wired in underneath. The analog sticks are exactly the same.

Here's a shot of the headphone jack. The system also features an AV jack that can be used to play video from any composite source. I've never once used this feature, but it's so nice knowing it's there..

I designed the case on my PC using a CAD program called Solidworks. I started by creating all of the PS one components, then I built the case around them. Creating the case was the most time consuming part of the project.

The stereo lithography process is very expensive. The two palmPSone cases I had made cost me around $450 dollars for both. The advantage is reasonably tight tolerances and the ability to create absolutely any shape you can imagine. Yep, even a hollow sphere.

Some people criticized the lack of a door to protect the CD. A few people actually thought the disc would fly off and the laser would somehow burn your retina. I found the idea of creating a hinge and latch intimidating. In the end it worked out okay. I made this machine back in '04 and am still very proud of it. As always you're welcome to email me with questions.
